Shout 85258: Free 24/7 Text Mental Health Crisis Support for Children & Young People
## What is Shout 85258? Shout 85258 is the UK's first free 24/7 text service for anyone in crisis. If you're struggling to cope and need immediate support but don't feel able to make a phone call, you can text SHOUT to 85258 to start a conversation with a trained volunteer. The service is run by the charity Mental Health Innovations and was launched in partnership with the Royal Foundation. It's designed to meet people where they are - on their phones, through the familiar medium of texting. Shout provides an alternative to phone-based crisis services, recognising that many people (especially young people) find texting more comfortable and less intimidating than calling. ## Who Can Use Shout 85258? Shout is available to everyone regardless of age or location within the UK. While it's particularly popular with young people who may find texting easier than talking, anyone can use the service. Common reasons people text include suicidal thoughts, self-harm urges, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, bullying, abuse, and any moment when you feel you can't cope. You don't need to be in crisis to text - if you're struggling, that's reason enough. ## How Do I Access Shout 85258? Simply text **SHOUT** to **85258** at any time, day or night. The service is completely free - texts won't appear on your phone bill if you're on a contract, and won't use your credit if you're on pay-as-you-go. You'll typically be connected to a volunteer within minutes. You can text from anywhere - home, school, work, or public transport - making it accessible in situations where calling might not be possible. ## What Should I Expect? When you text, you'll be connected to a trained Crisis Volunteer who will provide support through text-based conversation. Volunteers are trained to help you move from a moment of crisis to a calmer place, using active listening and collaborative problem-solving techniques. Conversations typically last around 20-25 minutes, though there's no time limit. The service is confidential - the only time information might be shared is if a volunteer believes someone's life is at immediate risk.
